History of Ohio, volume IV, was the first book I came across that referenced one of my ancestors. In this case it was Calvin Essex (1848-1927) my 2nd great grand uncle who had a full photo printed along with a 3/4 a page biography. My 2nd great grandfather, Hannibal Hamlin Essex (1860-1944) was very briefly mentioned.
My most recent trip to the Columbus Metropolitan Library was going to include looking for said book before I was lost among all the new (old) information that was in front of me. I assumed my next chance to see the book in person would be my next trip to the library. Not so. I was lucky enough to receive many books from my grandmother recently. History of Ohio, volumes I-IV happened to be included! There is a fifth volume that is missing and the most sentimental of volumes, the fourth, is in the worst shape of the four. I cannot tell you though, how excited I was to see them in person and know that I would be taking them home with me.
I have not yet had the chance to read very much of them beyond skimming here and there while checking their condition. They appear to be full of good Ohio information.
I may have the fourth volume checked out by a professional, any advice or tips are welcome!
Notes to win you a bar bet: Yes, Hannibal Hamlin Essex is named after politician, Hannibal Hamlin, once a member of Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. -per family documents
